6.05–6.35 Masterclass: Successful Publishing for Speakers: How to Create Books that Sell (You)! Sue Richardson

Picture 1

Publishing books is high on most speakers’ ‘to do’ lists – both for the passive income books can generate and for the strength they can add to a speaker’s marketing arm.

But how do you go about publishing a really successful book? Which is the right publishing route for you: through the traditional publishing house or independently? And how can you make sure that your books are of the highest quality and represent you as the professional that you are?

In this masterclass, Sue Richardson will demystify the publishing process, offering all speakers, whether published already or not, her tips on how to be really successful at creating books that make people want you.

Sue Richardson is an editor, writer and speaker. Her company, Word4Word, specialises in providing professional publishing services to authors. Sue has a passion for books that has endured since her mother taught her to read at the age of three.

Climbing to succeed

What connects Mountaineering and Business Success? Come with me to one of the coldest places in the world and you will see!

Nigel Vardy began adventuring when he joined a three-month Raleigh International expedition to Chile in 1994. For the next few years he travelled and worked in the worlds tropical rainforests before catching the climbing bug. Already a keen hill walker, he began to explore the Scottish Hills in winter before climbing at altitude in Bolivia in 1998.

A year later came his near-fatal attempt on Mount McKinley, from which he escaped with his life, but minus all his toes, much of his fingers and most of his nose, all casualties of frostbite. His recovery was arduous, but with 18 months he had returned to rock climbing due to his enormous self-determination. He was soon back in the mountains and has since climbed in the Alps, the Himalayas, the Arctic and SE Asia. Through all these ordeals he has gained his incredible drive to succeed in life.

6.05–6.35 The Master Class –

Kenny Harris - Writing and Capturing Humorous Material

The most difficult job for many speakers is writing new material. Sitting at your desk, faced with a blank sheet of paper (or an unrelentingly blank word document), you search for inspiration, scream for new ideas ... and then decide to use the material you used last time. In this short Masterclass, Kenny will share with us his methods of finding, capturing and writing new ideas and new material for our speeches.

What goes Ha! Ha! Ha! Bonk? The Power and Art of Humorous Speeches

Kenny Harris is one of the few members of PSA excelling both as a keynote speaker and an after-dinner entertainer. A former advertising and marketing man – as well as stand-up comedian – in 2001 Kenny left agency world to develop Headsurfing™, his system for creative and productive thinking. Headsurfing™ is based on the habits of the highly creative people Kenny has worked with throughout his career. In 2005 he closed the PSA Convention with an after-dinner speech which won an unprecedented stand-up ovation. Even from the Americans.

Humour is one of the most incredible tools in the speaker’s armoury. It can provide powerful openings, allow you to say the unsayable, engage your audience and get them ‘onside’. But many speakers use humour ineffectively – or worse, inappropriately. In this high-energy, high-content session, Kenny will show us how and when to use effective and appropriate humour, helping us develop our own material for adding humour to our speeches.

March 2007

As usual this was a meeting crammed with great content and fantastic value. The host for this meeting was Barry Mapp who added his own brand of sparkle to the evening.

Our Theme for the Evening - Marketing

Master Class - Make Your PSA Web Page Work For You & Keynote 2 - Transform Your Business With Social Media

Rikki Arundel, Fellow of the PSA
There were two keynotes from Rikki Arundel (Past President and Fellow of PSA) - the first a Masterclass about how to get the best from the PSA website and the second a session on “Social Media”. Rikki was off to a flying start with quips about men’s bodies and women’s minds and taking the host’s gender slips in her stride with lines like “you can’t change gender without a sense of humour”. With regard to the PSA website, Rikki said it was clear that many PSA members were not making full use of the built-in features that make this a great marketing tool and discussion forum. This session is to be recommended to all PSA chapters. Rikki’s second slot was the equivalent of a half-day workshop on Social Media packed into a 30-minute session and we left with a full menu of things to do back at the coalface in order to improve our web presence and enhance our global visibility as speakers. Check out Rikki’s own PSA web page (www.rikkiarundel.com) demonstrating the use of many of the features covered in the presentation.

Picture 1 Showcase – Pen Sevier, Vital Health

The showcase session was by Pen Servier on the topic of Weight Management. We then moved into small groups to discuss what Pen did well and also how she might improve (some pictures of showcase discussions taken from previous meetings) Picture 2

Keynote 1 - Rob Brown, Fellow of the PSA
Stand Up, Speak Up & Stand Out! How to Build Your Personal Reputation as the ‘Go To’ Speaker

Rob Brown was our second keynote speaker for the evening. Rob is continually upping his game (he turned his annual income into a monthly income) and urged us all to do likewise. His focus was on our ‘reputation’ (we all know we have got one, but we often don’t know what it is, nor what we have done to get it). Rob took us through a simple exercise to find the main driver for our reputation – did we have a ‘pleasure’ profile (driven by feeling good); a prosperity profile (driven by money) or a popularity profile (driven by the celebrity status)? Rob also suggested that we find our niche and then say ‘no’ to all the other things we can do (whilst pointing out that saying ‘no’ doesn’t mean we won’t do other things if they come our way – saying ‘no’ means putting all our focus on our niche and targeting our marketing effort toward our niche). There were four aspects to developing a niche: the topic niche (what you are an expert on); the delivery niche (how you deliver your product and services); the geographic niche (where and when you choose to deliver your expertise) and the target market (who you do it for). Brilliant stuff from Rob as usual, who also mentioned in passing that in his experience there was only one other PSA chapter that generated the same energy and enthusiasm as the Midland Chapter!
